Why the 02 Trans Am Still Matters

The 2002 model year is the last time you could buy a Trans Am fresh off the dealer lot. The LS1 in a 2002 with the Ram Air hood made 325 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque from the factory. That's not just a number; it's a platform that responds to a cam, a set of headers, and a tune like almost nothing else. The T56 six-speed transmission bolts up to a solid torque arm rear setup, and the aftermarket is massive. You can still order suspension bushings, tubular control arms, and complete engine packages from dozens of suppliers. And because GM sold these cars in big numbers, parts are cheap. That's a very different story from building a BMW or an imported turbo car.

The Known Weak Spots and the Practical Fixes
